This day provides an opportunity to raise global public awareness of the challenges to the well being of the planet and the life it supports. The Day recognizes the collective responsibility to promote harmony with nature and the Earth, to achieve just balance among the economic, social, and environmental needs of the planet and of the future generations.

The UN General Assembly designed 22nd April as International Mother Earth Day through resolution A/RES/63/278, adopted in 2009.

Theme for 2022- This year’s theme is “Invest in our Planet”. This theme aims to bring change in business and the political climate. The prime focus is to “preserve and protect our health, our families, and our livelihoods”.

Points to know -

Good Friday 2022 - 15th April

Good Friday is a major festival of the Christian community that usually falls in April every year, as per the Gregorian calendar. It is the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified at the Roman Calvary where he later died. The day of Good Friday varies from one year to the next on both the Gregorian and Julian calendars.

This is the day of mourning as Jesus died for the sins of his children so that their sins are forgiven and they are liberated from the pain and agony of their lives. It also signifies that after all the sins of all bad deeds are eliminated with the death of Jesus, a new hope of life will be born on the day of resurrection of Jesus, i.e. on Easter. Preceding the Good Friday is the Maundy Thursday which commemorates the last supper that Jesus had before being crucified. The service of the Great Three Hours Agony is also held from noon till 3 pm in some churches. This time is believed to be a dark period that followed the death of Jesus.

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti 2022 - 14th April

Ambedkar Jayanti is annually celebrated on the 14th of April to commemorate the birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Dr. Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1891. In April 2022, we are marking the 131st birth anniversary of Baba Saheb.

Dr. Ambedkar is known as the father of the Indian Constitution. He was the first law and justice minister of free India. He was bestowed with the country’s highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna in 1990 posthumously.

Key points-

(1) He was the chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly.

(2) He was a jurist and an economist. He was born in Mhow in the Central Provinces (modern day Madhya Pradesh) to a Marathi family with roots in the Ambadawe town of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra.

(3) He was a brilliant student and had doctoral degrees in economics from Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

(4) Baba Saheb was against caste-based discrimination in society and advocated for the Dalits to organize and demand their rights.

(5) He established the Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha to promote education and sociology economic improvements among the Dalits.

(6) He started magazines like Moolnayak, Equality Janta, and Bahishkrit Bharat.

(7) In 1927, he launched active agitation against untouchability. He organized and agitated for the rights of Dalits to enter temples and to draw water from water resources. He condemned Hindu scriptures that he thought propagated caste discrimination.

(8) He advocated separate electorates for the ‘depressed classes ‘the term by which Dalits were called at that time. He was in disagreement with Mahatma Gandhi at that time since Gandhiji was against any sort of reservation in the electorates. When the British government announced the ‘communal award in 1932, Gandhiji went on a fast in Yerwada Jail. An agreement was signed between Gandhiji and Ambedkar Ji in jail whereby it was agreed to give reserved seats to the depressed classes within the general electorate. This was called the Poona pact.

(9) He advocated a free economy with a stable rupee. He also mooted birth control for economic development. He was a staunch supporter of women's rights.

(10) He authored several books and essays, some of them are Annihilation of caste, Pakistan or Partition of India, The Buddha, and his Dhamma, The Evolution of provincial finance in British India administration and Finance of East India Company, etc.

(11) A few months before he died he converted to Buddhism in a public ceremony in Nagpur and with him, lakhs of Dalits converted to Buddhism.

(12) Baba Saheb died of ill health in 1956 in Delhi. He was cremated according to Buddhist rites in Darbar and a memorial is constructed there. The place is called Chaitya Bhoomi.

Dr. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution succinctly remarked about it and said that a good Constitution may turn out to be bad because those who are called to work it, happen to a bad lot. However bad a Constitution may be, it may turn out to be good if those who are called to work it, happen to be a good lot. The working of a Constitution does not depend wholly upon the nature of the Constitution. The Constitution can provide only the organs of the state such as the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. The factors on which the working of these organs of the state depend are the people and the political parties they will set up as their instruments to carry out their wishes and their politics. In his book ‘Annihilation of caste’, he aptly remarked that Bhakti in religion could lead to salvation, but in politics, bhakti is a sure road to eventual dictatorship.

Mahavir Jayanti 2022 - 14th April

Mahavir Jayanti is a significant festival of Jains. The day is celebrated to mark the birth of the 24th Tirthankara, the last spiritual leader of Jains.

The prince and last Tirthankara of Jainism was born to queen Trishala and king Siddhartha of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Lord Mahavir who had no interest in running the empire left all worldly possession and took the spiritual path to practice Jainism.

Mahavir sought people to follow the path of ahimsa (non violence), Satya (truth), asteya (non stealing), brahmacharya(chastity), and aparigraha (non-attachment). He called them a path of spiritual liberation. He taught the principles of Anekantavada (many sided reality), Syadvada, and Nayavada.

On this day Jain believers engage in charitable acts, prayers, pujas, and vratas. The idol of Lord Mahavir is carried out on a chariot in rath yatra.

International Women’s Day 2022

8th March

UNESCO states “International Women’s Day is an occasion to celebrate the progress made towards achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment but also to critically reflect on those accomplishments and strive for a greater momentum towards gender equality worldwide. It is a day to recognise the extraordinary acts of women and to stand together, as a united force, to advance gender equality around the world“.

History - According to UNESCO, International Women’s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century across North America and Europe.UNESCO states, the first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, which the Socialist Party of America dedicated in honour of the 1908 garments workers strike where women protested against harsh working conditions. In 1917, women in Russia chose to protest and strike under the slogan “Bread and Peace“ on the last Sunday in February (which fell on the 8th march on the Gregorian calendar). Their movement ultimately led to the enactment of women’s suffrage in Russia.

It was in 1945 that the Charter of the United Nations became the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men but it was only on March 8 during International Women’s year in 1975 that the UN celebrated its first official International Women’s Day.

Later in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution that proclaimed a United Nations Day for women’s rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by member states, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. Finally, following its adoption by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day became a mainstream global holiday where member states were invited to proclaim March 8 as an official UN holiday for women’s rights and world peace.

The theme for 2022 - ‘Break the Bias‘ is the theme for the year, which imagines a gender-equal world, a world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination based on equitable and inclusive principles.

The empowerment of women is a socio-political ideal envisioned in relation to the wider framework of women’s rights. It is a process that leads women to realise their full potential, their rights to have access to opportunities, resources and choices with the freedom of decision making both within and outside the home. Empowerment would be achieved only when advancement in the conditions of women is accompanied by their ability to influence the direction of social change gained through equal opportunities in economic, social and political spheres of life .
