Thanks ‪@houdini3d‬ for providing the opportunity to share this work.

This demo shows the first open cloud infrastructure test that is not just cheaper than any other option available, but faster and more efficient.  The cloud operates here so tightly with my own network that it feels like an extension of the workstation I am using.  It lays a foundation for improved collaboration in the future, and since I'm an artist myself, my motivations for its design go beyond the managed solutions we have seen with cloud until now.

You will see more in the presentation, but I want abilities like this to continue for artists and studios:

- Maximum flexibility for us to choose our own storage solutions.

- Access to render nodes at their base price

- Optimized to approach minimal ongoing running cost.

- No isolation from direct control through an interface.  The render nodes appear just as if they are on my private network thanks to openVPN.

- The ability to use Side FX PDG for granular dependencies, uploading and downloading as a per frame dependency.

- The beginnings of using PDG to track work items that exist in cloud storage or on a local NAS for future synchronization.

- Remote quality control options, and avoiding transfer over the internet of the 70GB simulation which is more than my connection could reasonably handle.

- We also show a remote workstation spun up on demand to interact with that heavy data!  We use Teradici PCOIP for the remote desktop, a popular industry choice used by the biggest studios out there and it performs wonderfully.

What is also exciting is that I was able to run this test off a fairly mediocre internet connection at my new home in Adelaide (where I have moved to work with Rising Sun Pictures as an FX TD).  That connection has 10 Mbit/s up, 40 Mbit/s down, and about a 27 ms ping to my nearest cloud location in Sydney, so we can tell this isn't just going to be for those with beefy fiber connections.  And here we scale to 560 core hours over a one hour period for around $10 USD.
