The mission of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is to protect health, prevent disease, and promote health and well-being for the residents of Los Angeles County. This means protecting residents from health threats, such as food-borne illnesses, natural and man-made disasters, toxic exposures, and preventable illness and injury. The Department also works to prevent chronic diseases—such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes—and their risk factors, including poor nutrition, inadequate physical activity, and tobacco use.
