A Mute Swan bringing elegance to the local marsh. This species was introduced to the United States with the sole purpose of elevating garden scapes. Europeans brought the Mute Swans to North America from the mid 1800s till the early 1900s and as a result, some established feral populations that are seen in local ponds, lakes, and estuaries today. Here are more facts about the species:
In many cultures they are a symbol of love. They adorn white plumage and form notably long monogamous pairs. These mated pairs tend to only be broken if a partner dies. If a male looses his female partner and he mates with a younger female she will relocate to his territory, whereas if the female is older he will relocate. If a female looses her partner they will tend to rematch quickly with a younger male.
The black knob located at the base of the beak on a male Mute Swan will swell during breeding season. This is one sign to attracts willing and available mates!
Mute Swans are the species noted in the famous childhood story of The Ugly Duckling by Christian Andersen.
