The netflix series changed a lot. The amount of waterbending he learned wasn't one of the things changed. That's what happens when you adapt a cartoon which is cheap to make into a full length live action show which takes a ton of money. The funny thing is if the anime didn't exist people would say it's one of the best netflix shows created.
