To Americans the shrink-to-fit concept is nothing new. The way most of them have been shrinking their 501s for decades is by washing them thoroughly before they start wearing them. Wash your 501s inside out at 86° F / 30° C. Levi's recommends you not to tumble-dry as it'll shrink the denim too much. Dry in the open air if you can, or hang

I have 30 or so pairs of Levi's (mostly 2007-2010 LVC but also some higher end Red Tab with Japanese and Turkish denim fabrics) that I currently rotate. In fact, I'd say that my 2015 Levi's 501c (non-stretch) are unarguably better made than my 2010 Levi's 501. Fabric is another story altogether.

An homage to the ultimate thrill-seekers of the '50s: bikers. The Levi's® Vintage Clothing 1955 501® Jean has a distinct "anti-fit" (or, slightly looser cut that stands in opposition to slimmer and skinnier styles) in the seat, as well as slightly fuller cut around the leg and an overall boxier silhouette.

Depends on how you quantify the additional cost. Japanese denim isn't inherently better than American or European denim. It's just different.
