I think there was a subtle plot line throughout the first season describing how Glep was getting his "Popeye" gland removed (as in Popeye the sailor man). IIRC there's a whole TV program on in the background of some scene about how you can get the surgery done in Brazil - I assume the unstated impetus for their trip there.
