Here goes another theory:
Au/Ra wasn't human, an android made in the past mv panic room (she practically wants to be human by grabbing a heart of one of the doctors, held it close to her heart perhaps she thought it'll make her feel like one of us. Confused she went on a killing spree to find more hearts).
In this mv the secret organization who made her somehow locked her in a closed room. Without her knowledge she was left there to be a human attraction. Because it's mesmerizing to see a robot act and tries to be human. Also it can be a dual meaning since she tries to mimic human emotions, she has none in the end. Hence 'Emoji'.
I haven't watch Outsiders yet so that's my current theory for now.

"This is the main verse of the song, around which the content of the song is built. Au/Ra describes the meaning of this verse as follows: āIād rather keep texting and communicating over the internet where the āsafe zoneā is, than having to be face to face with this person in reality.āāØSo the phrase āstay Emojiā is basically a paraphrase for staying anonymous, as the other person has no other pictures of Au/Ra in his head than the Emojis Au/Ra sent and therefore doesnāt know her true personality, and vice versa. Au/Ra wants to keep it like that, as she is too afraid of not matching the picture the other person has developed of her, and doesnāt want to get her feelings hurt if the other person doesnāt turn out to live up the picture she has built up of him/her." via Genius

This Music video is so original, not just you singing along to the song like most artists do, I appreciate the care you put into your videos and how much thought goes into every shot. Both you, the director and the team deserve huge appreciation for this. The Music video is truly a work of art. Excuse me as I spend the rest of my evening deciphering the hidden meanings in the video. Thank you for this Au/Ra x

This video is wayyy too complex for my little brain to understand
BUT
This is how I understood it : at the beginning we see a normal girl, a bit stereotyped (straight long hair, pink room and pink clothes, makeup, hairbrush ...) but when she applies the lipstick she "glitches" and goes off for a sec : bc I think she is actually a machine. If we dig deeper and take the lyrics in consideration, then we can assume that the girl-machine is the "emoji version" of Au/Ra. Like there is the real Au/Ra (that we don't see at all) and her "internet" self, the person she makes believe she is to the viewers (her followers maybe ?), the people who stare at her at the very end of the video. She makes them believe she is a beautiful girl (with makeup) living in a happy pinky world with no problems at all. A bit like all those "instagram-perfect-people-but-not-so-perfect-in-reality-but-we-don't-know-it".
Anyway, so she wakes up from her "glitching-to-off" phase and panic, bc she doesn't want her real self to be seen or even assumed by the viewers.
But her foot and her jerky face moves (fluttering her eyelashes, shake her head and strange look) show that she's still glitching even though she doesnt want to.
She ignores it all and continue doing her makeup, building her "internet" self, beautiful and happy (probably sending plenty of happy emojis whereas shes in reality not that much happy)
I don't get the symbols at 1:21 and on the fan at the beginning though. Is she like counting her days in the pinky room, making this whole "fake" existance a trap ? A jail ? She even cut the symbol on her curtain or something, is it another indication of her glitching or ?
1:27 "You don't have to watch your back" said she but her eyes are saying "YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M CAPABLE OF AND YOU SHOULD TOTALY WATCH YOUR BACK CAUSE I'M GONNA KILL YOU". So here clearly we can see that her "internet" self isn't her true self, and believing otherwise is completly stupid and dangerous. Actually, her viewers don't know het at all.
Then her nose is bleeding a dark liquid, to show that the glitching is increasing and gaining importance in her body, and metaphorically that her "internet" self is losing credibility and the viewers are starting to understand that she is lying (or is it simply Au/Ra herself that can't bear making the viewers believing she is someone else ? Is it what the glitching thing is all about ? Her realising it is wrong, it is not her ? Aaargh so many possibilities I can't decide š).
Well WHATEVER THE GLITCHING THING MEANS it makes her panic even more, touching her face with a desesperate look, when she seems to realise that there is something under her skin. So she just ... take it off ? (Ughh a bit disgusting) and under her "skin", which symbolise her mask, her hiding behind a false internet identity, under it there is a ... a what ? A robot ? Some electric machinery ? Well something symbolysing her "internet" self. So she finally discovers that this is all fake (what I'm writting doesnt make any sense anymore Im sorry), that internet isn't the reality, that is was all an illusion (when she literally TOOK OFF HER FACE and stare at it) and it breaks her down.
And all along the viewers were ... viewing ? - looking - and there is 2 possibilities : either they saw it all, her realising she isn't who she'd like to be/was thinking she was/made the viewers believing she was and they saw her broke down but didnt do anything, OR the "internet" Au/Ra is still here, lying to them and they didnt see the interior/inner realisation and desesperation of Au/Ra.
Well sorry if you read it all bc its not even logical šš Im even more lost about the meaning of the video than I already was BEFORE writting all of this š (and sorry if its not well written im french so pardon my english)
(Its a mess but im gonna post it anyway so ppl will maybe help me understand it) (btw the symbols are the thing I understand the less so if someone got it I'd love some explanations)
Edit : oh also I didnt get the thing with her nails lol
Edit : and the colors of her room change accordingly to her feelings : pink at the start, happy with her fake-but-great life, then red with her panicking and dark with her realisation and depression (I guess lol)
Edit : wait her clothes are changing

My Theory: Ok so first, the au/ra we see in the beginning is a persona sheās trying to keep up with how the internet wants her to be all āperfectā thatās why the room is so neat and kept pristine, the glitch we see is her trying to escape from this fake her sheās emitting, but she doesnāt regain full control. As the fake her regains control she tries to complete her perfect look with now applying the mascara, yet again another glitch, this time she gains some sort of control and starts to peel at her skin. Which i think is some sort of symbolization of her wearing a mask and acting as some one she isnāt. The ending to the video with the red light flashing is au/ra now realizing sheās being controlled in some sort of way, she realizes she canāt get out of the room, and this takes the mask off, which symbolizes yet again her not being true to who she wants to be, but she realizes this and chooses her view of herself instead of social mediaās view towards her and how they want her. The people watching could symbolize the internet, watching her every move.
Now the title of the song Emoji, I think itās named that because an Emoji has many different meaning depending on which one you use, āIād rather stay emojiā that lyric to me is an implication that au/ra would rather be an emoji even though it has more than one meaning to it, itās staying true to itself, get it?

I think the video symbolises catfishing in a way, she's stuck pretending to be a person she isn't and she ends up completely losing her identity. The people looking in on her could be how she always seems to have an audience online and she doesn't feel she has any real privacy. Seeing as she's putting a false version of herself and projecting a fake personality she disconnects from herself (removing her own face and lying down)
the lights changing could reflect feelings she can't be honest about, and the liquid from her nose could represent who she really is trying to come out. But because of her own insecurities would rather live with the idea of what people think she is and not who she actually IS. Shedding her outside skin is like peeling off the fake and not real.

I feel like the meaning of this video is how the girl has feelings which might be too much for her to handle for example her self esteem how she keeps doing her makeup and then messes up and everything like that. That's why she saids I rather stay emojie or something like that bcuz she doesn't want to keep feeling so many emotion idk this is just what I think

i have a theory on what the song means- it might've been said already but i just want to say mine and my evidence anyway ;w;
i think it means that she wants to stay fake so she doesn't upset people (āi'd rather stay emojiā). being fake as in putting on a fake, happy personality. telling people how you feel or how depressed you really are, is scary. like how the other person that you're telling can easily leave you because they can think of you as some helpless wimp, or just make you feel more terrible than you already haveāwhich, i've learned the hard way... which leads to how putting on a fake smile is better than spilling your heart out.
this goes back to āi'd rather stay emojiā because emojis are expressions used for texting/online stuff. texting/online stuff can be very believable. for example, compare asking out a person through text and through a face-to-face talk. through text, the person can say what they want to say without showing embarrassment because the person on the other end can't see them. they'll seem really confident. but through face-to-face, you can see the embarrassment in the person, knowing they're nervous/embarrassed, not very confident compared to text. she also shows this through the line āi think you must be cool, because you used the alien faceā being confident/cool is more powerful than being nervous/scared, so au/ra wants to look more powerful by using āemojisā.
i think she's portrayed as some robot on the inside because that shows her being different, which leads to judging and leaving, which also leads to how she wants to cover up.
when she āglitches outā, like when she āshuts offā for a bit when doing her lip stick or gets a nose bleed of some metallic thing, she panics. that's because she doesn't want to show the ādifferentā side of herāor, reveal her feelings, or else, judging, blah blah blah. you probably get the point now.
it says ādon't wipe this smile off my faceā because she doesn't want to lose her happy mood/wants to keep disguising herself. next, it says ādon't want this fragile heart to breakā because she doesn't want people leaving her and she doesn't want to feel more depressed than she already is.
at the end, she finally has shown her true self to people and is absolutely devastated because they're all judging her and she failed her own task.
if my theory is right, i can really connect to this song because i actually hide my feelings most of the time. when somebody says maybe just a sentence about their feelings/depression, i think about mine for the next minute, but try my best to forget it as soon as possible. not wanting to show other people because i'm scared of them thinking of me as something annoying, just that ādepressed girlā, you know?
ok i sound like i hypocrite while sharing my feelings right now but look, i'm just connecting to the song so fite me lol-
so uh yeah das my theory š¤·š»āāļø
