5 tips for better catamaran maneuvers—or maybe we can call them habits:
1. Feel the throttles and get comfortable with how rough or soft you need to treat them. Understand where that natural position is—you should be able to feel it with your eyes closed so you don’t end up prop-wrapping a mooring ball or, worse, a person 🥲.
2. Use one hand for the engine and one hand on the helm—either spinning it or holding it in place if you’re doing slow, close-quarters maneuvers. You don’t need two hands on both throttles; it makes you look bad and develops bad habits, like relying too much on the engine.
3. Wait for the boat to respond. It takes time to move, and when she does, she builds momentum. Pay attention to it.
4. Love taps ❤️: A quick burst with one engine gives you quick left or right maneuverability without stopping your forward or backward trajectory. The absolute king of maneuvering a catamaran.
5. Practice: Go out there and figure-8 around some mooring balls. Take all the fenders out and go kiss some docks—gently.
