Best part of learning music theory is you can learn WHY certain stuff sounds good.
I donāt often play āin scaleā I tend to skip around between them. Like playing the main riff in A locrian and then the chorus in A Phrygian.

Music theory opens up so many doors for guitar players. I think it's a disservice to your craft not to learn it or at least to try.
All the same, tabs are a great way to get started on guitar and there's no reason you can't learn tabs and sheet music simultaneously.
Especially while you're starting out, using both can make it even easier to learn since they both teach you different ways to relate to your guitar and how to play it.
Also, tabs make it easy to learn a cool riff to show off with so you can impress your friends (or the opposite sex) which we all know is why you decided to learn guitar.
Tabs give you a good sense of progress in the early stages of learning and helps you to feel more confident with the general mechanics of things.
If you struggle with the theory side of things, stick with it, it makes you a way more versatile musician and other musicians will enjoy working with you more than if you only learn tabs.
Playing by ear is totally valid too, but it's pretty hard to learn if you're not geared that way.

It can be very intimidating, but trust me guys, when you learn why things are the way they are, you can write better music and understand why your favorite music sounds good and really transforms your playing. You don't have to dive head-first into books if that's not your style, there are plenty of creators, like this guys, who make music theory digestible and easy to understand for people who learn by seeing and hearing. It has been really useful for me, especially if I feel stuck and want to learn something new.
