Tough love or toxic ballet corrections?Â
For too long, the ballet world has normalized harmful comments to dancers disguised as âcorrections.â Phrases like âbe appreciative of correctionsâ have been twisted into justification for personal attacks, criticism of unchangeable anatomy, different learning styles, or outright belittlement.
Whoever came up with this idea must have had some serious unresolved insecurities in their education...
Yes, constructive feedback is GOLD. We NEED it to grow as ballet dancers.Â
When itâs honest, helpful, and aimed at improvement, soak it up! But if the âcorrectionâ crosses the line into attacking your worth, appearance, or anatomyâlet me be clearâyou donât owe anyone your gratitude for that.
In fact, silence from a teacher would be better than toxic feedback.
Hereâs something to think about: the next time youâre in ballet class and look in the mirror, ask yourselfâwhen you donât like what you see, is that really your voice?
Or is it the voice of a teacher who inserted a negative narrative into your mind through toxic corrections? Because sometimes, what youâre feeling stems from their lack of knowledge or insecuritiesâNOT your reflection.
As someone with degrees in physical therapy, dance, personal training and even minor in psychology, there's a lot of different positive ways you can boost a dancer and give QUALITY feedback.
And if you're a teacher who is purposely ignoring students because of their "lack of potential," that just means you're taking the easy way out. It takes a lot more knowledge, skill, and education as a dance educator to make a great dancer out of someone who was NOT naturally gifted.Â
Iâve rewritten my narrative and learned to differentiate between feedback that builds up and âcorrectionsâ that leave scars on a dancer's soul.Â
If you (or your child) are receiving comments like those on this slideâor worse, nothing at all from teachersâcomment METAMORPHOSIS below, and letâs start your transformation into a stronger, healthier dancer.
đĄ Black Friday Full Access opens November 26th! Donât miss your chance to step into a space where feedback is constructive, empowering, and never toxic no matter your age or body.Â
