Toxic ballet corrections that are harmful to a ballet dancer's growth

Tough love or toxic ballet corrections?

For too long, the ballet world has normalized harmful comments to dancers disguised as “corrections.” Phrases like “be appreciative of corrections” have been twisted into justification for personal attacks, criticism of unchangeable anatomy, different learning styles, or outright belittlement.

Whoever came up with this idea must have had some serious unresolved insecurities in their education...

Yes, constructive feedback is GOLD. We NEED it to grow as ballet dancers.

When it’s honest, helpful, and aimed at improvement, soak it up! But if the “correction” crosses the line into attacking your worth, appearance, or anatomy—let me be clear—you don’t owe anyone your gratitude for that.

In fact, silence from a teacher would be better than toxic feedback.

Here’s something to think about: the next time you’re in ballet class and look in the mirror, ask yourself—when you don’t like what you see, is that really your voice?

Or is it the voice of a teacher who inserted a negative narrative into your mind through toxic corrections? Because sometimes, what you’re feeling stems from their lack of knowledge or insecurities—NOT your reflection.

As someone with degrees in physical therapy, dance, personal training and even minor in psychology, there's a lot of different positive ways you can boost a dancer and give QUALITY feedback.

And if you're a teacher who is purposely ignoring students because of their "lack of potential," that just means you're taking the easy way out. It takes a lot more knowledge, skill, and education as a dance educator to make a great dancer out of someone who was NOT naturally gifted.

I’ve rewritten my narrative and learned to differentiate between feedback that builds up and “corrections” that leave scars on a dancer's soul.

If you (or your child) are receiving comments like those on this slide—or worse, nothing at all from teachers—comment METAMORPHOSIS below, and let’s start your transformation into a stronger, healthier dancer.

💡 Black Friday Full Access opens November 26th! Don’t miss your chance to step into a space where feedback is constructive, empowering, and never toxic no matter your age or body.
