Her being apathetic to one baby dying is supposed to show the cruelty of nature. Animals just have to live this way all their lives, not knowing when someone is going to be killed because they’re all just trying to survive.

I like to think thats shes grown much more experienced as a mother that her main priority is to teach the necessary skills to survive and live. She even scolds them "you dont need to explain why youre dead!" Meaning unnecessary could lead to death.
She reminds me too much of a experienced mom at playground idly chatting with a new mom who is fretting over everything and experienced moms kid screams as they fall from the playground and instead of jumping up and running towards them she shouts from the bench "are you hurt?! No? Okay Do your breathing exercises. Youre okay! Get up and play when youre ready! Yep i know it was scary but youre a tough kid! Atta kid! Good job !. Now where were we? Oh yeah theyre fiiiiiine. Best way to learn risk assessment is on a playground."

There's no room for mourning when you're struggling to survive, without any prior knowledge. She knows a mother has to wnsure the survival of its children. If it dies, she wasnt up to task, and she needs to better for the other children.
