I love this story because my daughter (as a toddler) used to rummage through random purses at church looking for gum. I was concerned she might swallow gum so I never gave her any. Unbeknownst to me, ladies at church would purposely hide gum in their purses because they knew my little girl would be looking for it in there. Years later, I found out they did this for her ❤

This reminds me so much of a time when I was speaking to other kids in elementary school about idioms because I found them to be really fun, and one of them immediately ran to a teacher and told them I was calling other kids "idiots". They went and grabbed multiple members of staff who vigorously scolded me and repeatedly said I was lying about "Just talking about idioms" because they thought it wasn't a real word and tried to force me to apologize. I cried and cried, but I stood my ground and refused to apologize for something I didn't do, to the point that they called my mother from work and made her come to the school to participate. I assume they expected her to scold me but, lo and behold, my mother was also a teacher (just at a different school) and she spent thirty minutes explaining to the other teachers that I 100% wasn't lying because she had taught me about idioms at dinner the night before. One of the other teachers kept saying she'd "never heard the word before" which, in hindsight, was pretty concerning lol. I won't go into detail about how the teachers proceeded to treat me for the rest of my time at the school, but I'll just say they were extremely good at holding grudges towards eight year olds.

This reminds me of my grandfather who always had some gum on him to give to me and others. I miss him dearly. Even at his funeral they had packages of gum to give to those who came because we all knew he always would have some. This is a sweet story that just really made me remanence on some old memories of mine.

For me it was a blind grandpa named Nick who gave candy to anybody, and could recognize any of the kids by voice alone. He knew me because one time, I was having a time of telling him about something, and he couldn't hear me, so he tilted his head towards me to hear better and I could see his hearing aids attached to the shell of his ear. Without missing a beat, my haughty adolescent self declared, "well, it's no wonder you cant hear me, Mr. Nick! You have a whole bunch of stuff in your ears!".... That was/is my legacy at my childhood church.

She probably was a sweetest thing. Sweet how nice people can leave impacts on children like that.
