I like to put a moon gel or a small piece of rolled up tape in the middle to act as my finger, that way thereās no pressure and it allows me to hear the lugs clearly.

I'm from the true Old School back in the day Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Jim Chapin, Jack Dejohnette, Max Roach, Philly Jo.
Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Joe Morello & so many others that tuned always from around the outside gradually down into the center. So I guess this depends on what do you call Old School because all of these drummers used this method & they're drums sounded great!!!
