“Exemplified the quality and professionalism…” and his massive balls of steel.

I remember seeing a sign at an FBO/A&P facility in Alaska. It read,

"The modern fighter aircraft:
Designed by PhDs,
Built by Masters level engineers,
Flown by Bachelors holders,
And kept working by High School graduates.
And they all have to be experts in their respective fields to keep the aircraft performing as needed."

Such a pilot ice water response;
"Welp, that confirms the fire light."

If I could go back in time, I'd go back to when the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels flew the F-4 Phantom. I wasn't into aviation until I was 20, just shortly after the Blue Angels switched from A-4's to legacy Hornets. As a civilian trained pilot, I was fortunate to have a former Air Force T-38 instructor as my CFI and a retired Navy test pilot as another CFI years later. I learned more from those military guys than anyone else.

"The crew chief owns the aircraft, the pilot just rents it from him"

“Do you know your aircraft is on fire?”
“Well, now the fire light makes more sense…”

Just takes 1 person to realize 1 thing to save the day. Love it.

It sounds like a handle the situation very calmly but Ron Penn.He handled it brilliantly and I hope he got recognition for that and his jacket.

The speaker featured in this video is former Blue Angels pilot, Denny Sapp, who served as a Solo Pilot during the 1975 and 1976 air show season. The incident mentioned in this narrative occurred in March of 1976 at NAF El Centro.

I had a pilot have a stroke and pass out during launch. The jet was running thankfully the canopy wasn’t fully closed and locked with the spider handle. Once I noticed the pilot not responding to my call outs I swung around front and noticed him slumped over. I immediately notified the expeditor ( flightline supervisor) and went to the back of the plane and opened a access panel that has the MFSOV ( main fuel shut off valve ) and pushed the lever in closed position till the engine starved itself. We pulled the ladder and went up to the cockpit to check on his condition. Thankfully he made a full recovery but lost his wings.

My first air show growing up was at Torrejon AB in Spain. The Blue Angles were flying the F-4 Phantom in 1971. I met the CO. I was standing there next to one of the planes he came up to me and asked me if I wanted to fly one. I told him no sir I want to fix them. 9 years later I was working on Phantoms in VF-74 (first in Phantoms)

The equivalent of a mechanic knowing how to stop a runaway diesel. Good tech’s know their equipment and how to protect it and its operators.

I got temporarily in trouble for something similar. At a base in Afghanistan, an aircraft returning had a skid of filled flammable gas tanks that began leaking. 1 tank began shooting a flame. The loadmaster went to dump the skid and it got stuck on the ramp. This aircraft was now next to 4 other planes and a tent full of people. I grabbed a forklift, raced over, grabbed the skid, and ran it away to safety. Turns out that the bottles were not secured properly. Something happened on landing or after that cracked the valve with metal on metal contact. I was in trouble by my immediate supervisor for a few hours, but that went away once leadership understood I prevented the potential loss of multiple lives and multiple aircraft.

As an airframer at NAS Pensacola, I always heard incredibly stories about both the pilots of the Blue Angels and the maintainers. Great story!
