I'm an aircraft mechanic, as soon as you said "time for sewing class" I got excited lol.

I think the clothes you're wearing is more controversial than how you sealed up the engine. 😂😂

I'm mechanic seems 1971 and you bring tears to my eyes because I learn that from my dad my mentor and father today I'm not working because medical conditions. Thanks

Dad was a sealing and bonding tech at McDonnell Douglas Aerospace in Santa Monica CA
We were using RTV in 1966. He taught me to start with cleaned surfaces a only apply enough to cover the part. I was a auto tech and rarely had issues with leaking engine following his instructions.
BTW he sealed the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space capsules and also Sky Lab.

you can use some super glue at the base of the fibers of the acid brush to stop the hair falling off. Use it all the time on brushes I use for top coats of epoxy and carbon fiber parts.

I love how many people don't realise the thread is doing several different things at once. It creates a constant thickness of sealant, it also allows swelling of the thread over time to seal miniscule gaps that may happen over time as the thread can swell minutely. It also shows the skill of the engine builder to know to use the technique.

He's absolutely correct, it is used on Lycoming aircraft engines and is a VERY reliable technique, but it doesn't work the way he thinks it does. It is not an extra seal, but it works to create a minimum gap and prevent the sealant being squeezed out too thin. It increases bearing clearnances, but only by a few tenths.

The thread is used like Skrim is used in composite adhesives bonding. It makes a consistent thickness of sealant so you won’t have .030” between the studs and .000” at the base of the stud. The acid brush trick is very good idea. I’ll use that. Good video.

Wow, not a single Facebook Certified Mechanic calling this out.

You can use a drop or 2 of super thin CA to glue the brush base so they won't shed. also works a treat for the cheap chip brushes most people use for fiberglass work.

Yup. Split aircraft engines like Lycoming use silk thread. They do not have caps for the main bearings, like this engine. The thread maintains the correct gap and pressure on the bearings when torqued. Rubber or paper will crush over time. Lycoming recommends two rows of thread I believe. I have never worked on a Porsche engine but it looks similar.

I rebuilt a few VW engines when I was a kid and I always used thread like that to seal the halves of the crankcase together.

Wow. Threading the gasket. What a blast from the past.

In aircraft engines we now use anaerobic sealer without thread.

I alway used this on my aircooled engine rebuilds. I can't remember any of them leaking. Even years later they were still oil tight.

Never seen this b4.. But it certainly makes sense. Thanks 4 sharing..

aviation technique, use a constant length of thread beginning and ending at the same point, encompassing the bolt and once cement is cured trim at the correct end seal surface overlap

My dad showed me the string trick on old air cooled VW and Porsche blocks and i have never had a case leak either since 1989 when I built my 1st engine...

I have rebuilt roughly 10 Subaru engines over the last 3+ years. Haven’t had any leaks between the cases (that I know of, but will be adding “the sewing class” from now on. What an ingenious idea for preventative leaks!
