Text should be placed slightly higher as it's currently blocked by the YT UI

Around this time many European countries banned slavery on their soils, but kept investing money into the logistics side of it.

The passages about slavery were removed at the request of the southern colonies who didn't even want independence to begin with, were the most against it, and basically had to be coerced into it. Cutting those passages also set back the intention of the nation to remove slavery, but they knew that without all the colonies together, independence would be impossible. It was a compromise that set the country on a bad road, but it would not have been a country otherwise. Future generations ahead of ours will have to be the judge over whether it was ultimately a good or bad decision

The declaration was heavily inspired by the Dutch "plagiaat van verlatinge" the Dutch declaration of independence from Spain

Yeah... I learned about this in school.

Though the country was FAR from living up to its ideals (and I would argue we still have a long way to go) the path they set us on is a noble one and that generation has my respect.

According to historical records, nothing particularly significant happened on July 4 either. The Declaration was signed on July 2.

I think it better if text is placed on top

We stand on the shoulders of the generations that precede us. To those previous generations we owe a great debt of gratitude.

To purely judge the past through the lens of the present fails to recognize that we have built on their foundation. We have centuries of experience and growth unavailable to the founders of our nation.

I am mindful of the those that established a foundation of freedom, opportunity and equality that each succeeding generation has built upon. While they were flawed human beings, given the cultural, social, political and economic climate of 1776 their legacy is absolutely remarkable.

I hope future generations afford us the same respect and generosity in their assessment of how we have furthered the legacy of July 4, 1776

I think another surprising fact was that the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 2, July 4 was just the day independence took effect.

Tbh it would’ve been more weird if they addressed the slavery problem in the Declaration of Independence or in the Constitution right away (southern states = LOTS OF MONEY = appease them and their interests). It would’ve been as if they cared about their ideals/principles over money, to some people that would be crazy.
