She’s right about Japanese people caring too much of other people’s opinion. My mother is Japanese and she’s like that

Comments aren’t getting what she’s saying. She didn’t say that in the US your friends will never ask what your partner does. Just that it isn’t usually the first question when you tell them you’re seeing someone. And it might not have the same competitive energy behind it in the US vs Japan. Like obviously this is something that varies widely in the US and various subcultures might be different, but in general I think she right that friends are often more concerned with “How did you meet? What’s he like? Do you have a picture of him?” than with what his job is right away.

The 1st thing Americans would ask is where did you meet?

Not just Japan, I think this is an Asian thing. I mean being competitive,… On everything. ✌🏾

Guys... She's saying that they're asking about how much they make so they can compare themselves. It's all about passive aggressively being on top lol

I like how she carries herself. I'm glad she's grown into her own self outside of cultural norms and expectations, especially in a collectivist society such as Japan. I love that she put herself out there for seven years outside of her home country. That takes guts.

Thanks for sharing your experience and valuing who people are not what they do. That is an absolutely disgusting thing to ask FIRST. No matter how ubiquitous.

French people would probably ask the same question first, or among the first ones. I guess the intention behind the question (real or perceived) is what's bothering her.

Not sure what part of the States she lived in, but that's often the first question someone asks about my spouse...in the States or Canada.

アメリカのシリコンバレーに住んでるけど、アメリカ人同士の競争レベルは半端ないです。😅日本人は基本、他の国々の人達の中でもダントツに思いやりがあって優しい

Maybe they don’t ask what he does for a living because they know she is fierce and can make it on her own. 😅

“What do you do for a living” is a common question in the Southern US

You shouldn't be based on human value what you do for a living. That's just crap
