The Trevi fountain dates back to ancient Roman times in 19 B.C. The construction of the aqueduct Aqua Virgo provided water to the Center of Rome and Roman baths.

It was built at the end of the aqueduct, at the of three roads. This is where the fountain gets its name. ‘Tre vie’ meaning the street fountain.

The Trevi Fountain is made from travertine stone, which is the same material used to build the Colosseum. The travertine stone comes from a town called Tivoli 20 miles from Rome.

Each day over €2000 worth of coins are thrown into the fountain, in exchange for good luck. The legend is if you throw a coin into the fountain, it will ensure a return to Rome. Ancient Romans beloved the gods of water would offer them a safe return to the Ancient City.
