The other option is for... THE LEAGUE TO ACTUALLY FREAKING HELP!
Becoming champion before engaging the final phase of the villain team means the old champion and elite 4 and the bureaucracy can provide help tracking them down and cleaning up mooks while you dive right in to the boss!
Imagine the villain teams aren't a bunch of clowns who can be wiped out by one stupid rookie kid, but needs a whole army with the new champion dropping their boss and defeating their master plan. Up until then, you should just be defeating grunts, foiling schemes, and chasing off middle management

It's pretty annoying that Pokémon games keep ignoring the villain team because we have to do the gym challenge or do some irrelevant task. It makes it harder to take them seriously.
Remember the emotional moments in the climax in Sun & Moon that involved Lillie, her Mom, and Nebby? The credits should have rolled after Lillie says goodbye to the box legendary you caught. But no, we gotta take on the Pokémon league.
Black and White got it right. Save the champion fight for the post game and focus on the villian team in the main campaign.

Would be interesting to see them take a page out of the gen 1 manga where the league and champions are intertwined with the villain team.
Especially from a mechanics perspective. Like if Im meant to believe Koga is a team Rocket higher up, why not let the poison ninja gym leader just cheat? Let him use items before the battle even starts or switch after I send my first mon out before the battle technically starts. They could make some interesting challenges in gyms doing something like that, and then something like how Piers doesnt engage in the gimmic would be super interesting here because its a gym leader who doesnt cheat and is just genuinely powerful.

I think they usually leave the 8th gym, victory road, and league until after the confrontation with the big bad so you can actually use the box legend on your team for a little while. How lame would it be if you only gain access to the Pokémon you see every time you boot up the game after you’ve seen the credits and in an optional post game

Gotta be honest, I think focusing on villains like this just a little bit during the first half would work, but your main focus could be following your dreams of being a pokemon master, then after the league your PC could realize how serious a threat the villains are, spending the endgame focusing on them
Much better pace and stakes in my opinion

I have an idea for badges in Pokemon (aside from removing them of course).
What if the gym leader... Would give you the badge (and an HM if they are supposed to) after seeing your heroic deeds, like having a big part in defeating a team's admin or stopping some kind of a city wide disaster?
They are competent enough to do that, so obviously that proves that their skill is worth something right?
And if the gym leader is so hot/rizzed/cool of a character that you really want to fight them then maybe let the fight be optional so that you could get some kind of TM or other cool reward?
Besides that, a gym leader could have different reactions to your help, like "Wow, you are a surprisingly capable 12 year old but please don't do this again and let the authorities handle the local world ending cataclysm. Stay in your town and protect it until it's resolved if you really want to help so much." Or something.
If only Gym leaders would actually be involved in keeping order and fighting evil s**t in any Gen besides 5.

It is no wonder why I find Digimon and other monster collectors to have far better writing than Pokémon. To have a series with some of the most memorable creature designs in human history and continue to maintain these dog water "get all the gym badges and fight the league" nonsense is genuinely insulting and is holding it back from having actually great writing. I have to really wonder how Game Freak can just keep on doing this for 20+ years and not get bored to tears.

Man it would have been so awesome if after you beat Cynthia, CYRUS ATTACKS THE LEAGUE.
I want the pokemon games to have unforeseen stakes like this. Make me feel like getting to the league MEANS something in the grand scheme of the story and not just “oh hey you beat a narcissist genocidal psychopath!…anyways…TIME TO BECOME CHAMPION.”
Topping a break in the formula with a battle even harder then the champion would be PEAK bro.

Really does suck how they get undercut by just returning to the status quo immediately after one of the best villains in the franchise. At least the Champion Cynthia was doing something rather than just being in the background like most Gym Leaders, Elite 4 or Champion tend to do. They also have some colorful personalities in the Manga, especially the Admins and Cyrus.
