Munnings first saw the bed he portrays in yhis painting whilst staying with the historian and archaeologist Sir William Halliday, principal of Kings College. He decided to capture it on the spot. the bed was reputed to have had a sinister past, coming from Littlecote Hall, Wiltshire. There, Wild Will Darell murdered a baby and was convicted on evidence which included a piece of cloth from the bed

It's so cool that the mirror gave the reflection of the ghost on the other side of the room, make it looks like the woman being pointed both her sides.

In the mirror the candle is still lit, even though on the table you can see that it melted almost into nothing.
