I use to do 50 mile equine horse endurance races in the mountains of VA. In 6- hrs. Just you and your four-legged partner that you train with 8 to 10 miles twice a week for 40 weeks out of a year, rain, shine, storm, hail. Do 9 races a season. April through October. 90+ degrees in WV mountains in August. Pushing, drinking, vetting, behind the horse holding onto their tail and rein going up long steep washout mountains. And yet, the most beautiful sunrise I ever saw on the east coast was on top of a WV mountain and I stopped in the middle of the race in amazement. Only the Rockies of Montana and BC Canada were more amazing.

I found these comments juxtaposed next to your previous comments about what keeps people from backpacking interesting. I think the backpacking blog world tends to make backpacking a little intimidatingāexpensive gear, exhausting dawn to dusk hiking, pushing limits, yada, yada. I get that. You folks enjoy that ācompetitive backpackingā world. The fact of the matter is that I backpack to enjoy being out in the wilderness alone (with my trusty dog). It does require pushing myself sometimes since the good places are often hard to get to, but honestly this is my least favorite part of the adventure. Iām not criticizing, just commenting.

Yes!! We are doing the Oregon and Washington sections of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2023. Hubby and I are 56. In 2021 we hiked 495 PCT miles before my knee took me off trail. Canāt wait to get back out there!!!
