5 Facts about Sir John Campbell Longstaff

Born on 10 March 1861 in Clunes, Victoria, John Longstaff developed an early talent for painting and studied at the Melbourne National Gallery School from 1883 to 1887.

At just 23, his painting Motherless won him the National Gallery of Victoria Travelling Scholarship in 1887, allowing him to study in Europe.

After moving to Paris in 1888, Longstaff adopted impressionist techniques under the influence of John Russell but eventually returned to a more conservative, academic style.

Throughout his career, Longstaff became a prolific portraitist, painting high society figures in both Australia and Britain. He was appointed an official war artist during World War I and later became the President of the Victorian Artists Society in 1924.

Longstaff is best known for winning the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture five times and was knighted in 1928 for his contributions to art. He passed away on 1 October 1941.

I remember the first time I saw the word "motherless." My mom had recently passed. Someone gave me a book called motherless daughters. I was 14. I'm 42 and I'm still not ready to be a motherless daughter. I thank God for my own daughters. Oh, how different my life would be with her here.

It's interesting that the less mourning they are wearing, the more demonstrative they are.

I understand so much the loss of a parent, is such a strong pain, that really feels like you can’t stand on your feet or sit still, it puts you literally on your knees.

Now they have to face the world without her loving advice and support. The world looks different when no one looks after you, and in your best interest. At least they have each other.
