When I look at movies from the ’20s to the ’90s, I’m blown away by the worlds that filmmakers were able to create with their visuals. From Mary Poppins to Ben-Hur to Star Wars, they truly made things that people had never seen before — all with little to no help from computers.

How did they pull off such striking and novel visuals? Well, often, it was just with a paintbrush and some glass.

With a technique called matte painting, skilled artists would paint a scene and black out a portion of the frame for live-action photography. The actors would be filmed on footage that blacked out the painted backdrop,, and then filmmakers would combine the two exposures to make one seamless scene.

This, of course, all changed once computers entered the industry. By the late 1990s, matte paintings were almost entirely digital. Just a few decades later and now they’re almost all made in 3D.

With the development of AI, a new evolution might be on the horizon. Tune in to Vox’s latest to find out how AI might soon change the matte painting industry — again.

Wasn’t this the very thing the WGA/SAG strikes were about?

It's heinous how subtle it is that this is an ad for Microsoft- I didn't notice until other commenters mentioned the "presented by microsoft" at the VERY END

This whole short should be properly marked as Sponsored (by Microsoft Copilot, the AI product), not just on screen at the end.

Ai art still falls firmly into the realm of uncanny valley, at a passing glance it can pass as something human, but if your spend anything more than 3 seconds looking at it you will find something off, a human sense of artistry that is nearly impossible to replicate.

I prefer matte paintings. Artists should have those jobs, they're better than AI.

People say AI is the future and I cant deny that but lets look at the big picture most people will lose their job and slowly A.I would replace all type of artist like singer ,actor, etc.

The only one winning are the 1% greedy rich people and we(99%) are the losing one in the end

Piracy would be totally legal if a movie uses generative Ai because the ai itself didn't obey and copyright laws

No one would have merit in trademarking an "original work"

Ai is still in development and a lot of people resent it because it takes away artists job opportunities and doesn’t look as good as a human made work . But I think in the future when it becomes more developed and usable it shouldn’t replace artists , instead I personally think that artists should use ai as a tool and improve it by adding their own skill and save time and energy.

the gap of "text don't give you enough control" is a big issue for making this usable in a real context

Ai limits the control of the user. It just makes all the details itself and you don't know why and you cant change those how you like because theres thousands of details in an image. If you could change them all, you might as well paint it yourself.
