"I want a reason to play your game when it's not fun" Interesting thought. Not sure if that should really be the case though. But yeah, long term goals will let you play despite not having fun in the moment. I would say only follow this advice when designing an MMO or anything else that has grinding as a part of the game loop.

The whole point of playing games is to have fun. Video games are a form of escapism, so if it’s not giving you enjoyment as they were designed to, then it is perfectly fine to stop playing it.
