Are pit bulls as dangerous as everyone thinks? #shorts

Pit bulls are one of the most controversial and misunderstood dog breeds in America. Many critics view pit bulls as ā€œinherently dangerousā€ and say that they are more violent than other dogs. If you rely solely on news stories and cultural anecdotes, you might think thatā€™s the case. But dog bite statistics are less reliable than you may think.

Retrievers were bred to retrieve, and do so instinctively. Pointers were bred to point, and do so instinctively. Sheepdogs were bred to herd, and do so instinctively. Huskies were bred for the cold, and love snow instinctively. But pitbulls who were bred to bite and latch on to other animals? Well clearly their breed has no effect on their behavior!!!!

I'm normally a fan of Vox, but what's with the gaslighting in this video?

How can you in good faith make the argument that a type of dog that's been selectively bred for aggression for 200 years is "not inherently dangerous" compared to other dogs that have not? Obviously any dog can be dangerous, but saying that pitbulls are no more dangerous than small dogs because both may bite at similar rates is just absurd. Pomeranians aren't maiming and killing people. Similarly, show me all the videos of golden labs randomly (and relentlessly) attacking neighbors.

If you're trying to overturn the commonly held belief that pitbulls are more dangerous than other dogs, the burden of proof is on you, and a cherry-picked quote from 23 years ago is not sufficient evidence.

A bite from an average Pitbull has definitely more power - and thus can do more damage - than one from a Pomeranian. These are simple facts that can be proven scientifically.

I would never own a pet that I couldn't physically deal with if I had to. No one can predict a dog's behavior 100% in all situations.

Maybe people aren't reporting attacks from smaller dogs because it isn't as intense or life changing as attacks from bigger dogs lol?

Terrible journalism

Pulling a statement from over 23 years ago doesnā€™t really inspire confidence especially without any counter evidence

Are we just gonna pretend the decades if not centuries of selective breeding humanity did to dogs didnā€™t happen?

Ah yes, all those Golden Retriever maulings that go unreported. The vicious Great Danes eating babies. The Belgian Mal who ran away with that one guy's wife.

Wow, this short is terrible by Vox standards. šŸ˜³

"First, the pit bull is quicker to anger than most dogs, probably due to the breed's unusually high level of the neurotransmitter L-tyrosine. Second, pit bulls are frighteningly tenacious; their attacks frequently last for 15 minutes or longer, and nothingā€”hoses, violent blows or kicksā€”can easily stop them." - city-journal

It's called prey fixation. They are inherently dangerous. Some owners make it worse, mostly the ones that think their Fido wouldn't hurt a fly. They don't belong anywhere, except maybe the zoo.

Guess statistics don't count if you don't like the way they add up, huh?

Pit bull bites are vicious.

Although not directly mentioned, there is an aspect that makes pitbulls inherently dangerous and that is bite.

Pitbulls bite. It's going to be far more hazardous than a small dogs. So while it's true, small dogs and pitbulls may bite at the same rate, it doesn't mean the bite has the same hazard.

Alongside what people are saying about these dogs being bred to be more aggressive, I would also say that the owners of pit bulls probably have more not aggressive, but dominant personalities. You donā€™t see 80 year old grandma Meredith owning a pit bull for instance. But that 30 year old guy wearing a tank is probably more likely to own one instead of a Pomeranian.

They definitely are dangerous.

If small dogs and bigger dogs like pit bulls bite at around the same rate, maybe they are bigger and cause more injury? I think I see the reason why they are called more dangerous

Yes. Yes they are.

Of all the dogs I've ever felt unsafe being around probably 80% of them were pitbulls. Maybe it's the owners but I don't think so.
