De-bunking Food Myths around Hashimoto’s
There’s a lot of research and news swirling around about food and low thyroid production also known as Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism. Let’s take a deeper look:
Is soy safe to consume 0?
Soy can be problematic for those with Hashimoto's because it is a potential goitrogen. Goitrogens are substances that suppress the thyroid gland by interfering with thyroid hormone production, especially when ingested on a low-iodine diet. Soy has a lot of other health benefits so eat them in moderation.
Consider monitoring your intake of soy and make sure to check labels for Soy Lecithin which is frequently used as an emulsifier in foods (like chocolate).
Is gluten safe to consume?
Hashimoto's and celiac disease are both autoimmune disorders and can be interrelated. Check with your doctor to verify if you have celiac disease or a gluten-sensitivity. Eating gluten-free may not necessarily reverse your symptoms related to thyroid dysfunction, but it’s worth considering looking into and seeing if it can make an impact on your symptoms.
Is dairy safe to consume?
Proceed with caution. Excess estrogen levels — also known as estrogen dominance — can trigger Hashimoto’s. When it comes to the amount of steroid hormones we are exposed to in our food supply, about 60 to 80 percent of estrogens we consume come from milk and other dairy products. Also, lactose intolerance occurs at a high frequency in Hashimoto’s patients.
It may be beneficial if you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease to monitor your intake of soy, gluten, and dairy and discuss with your trusted health professional. Information here is not individualized.
