Roth has always been an enigma. Lukather has always been a great story teller. He'd be a great guy to have a beer with .

Luke is sure an easy guy to like. His personality reminds me of Mike Anthony.

Sammy Hagar is a much, much nicer human being. Met him in LA on the Venice Beach board walk just by chance and he talked to me for about 5 minutes just like any regular Joe wdve. Also has a great sense of humor as I aways have. It wdve been cool if Michael Anthony (VHs original nase player) had been with him because he's also a humble and great human being.

Luke is totally one of the coolest cats out there. Love this interview with him, and shame on David Lee Roth, his loss, as Luke could be a great friend. Luke is so humble, and cool, love all his interviews. But this one is my personal favorite, great sense of humor, and great spirit, one of the coolest cats in the music industry! Huge Toto fan!

I think Dave may have seemed so hostile because around the time of Fair Warning there were a lot of band politics going on between Ed & DLR & Dave was afraid of other musicians luring Ed away from the band. That might have been why Dave was so hostile to Steve during production on Fair Warning.... In a Sept 1986 interview with Steven Rosen Ed had said - 'My wife Valerie was p*ssed off too with Dave because she knew I wanted to quit the band when we were doing Fair Warning'....Maybe in 1981 Dave knew Ed was thinking of quitting & was scared Steve was going to tempt Ed away from the band because of Ed's dissatisfaction. Plus the VH circle was breaking so much new innovative ground in 1981 that the band existed in a rarefied atmosphere and its participants guarded its frontiers jealously....That could also have been the reason why Donn wanted to concentrate on working so exclusively with ED. Donn actually went on to BUILD the 5150 studio at Eds place.

DLR’s vibe publicly is so upbeat and positive while professionally he’s often MISERABLE to deal with. He’s like Rainbow Randolph in Death To Smoochy.😵‍

In all fairness Roth had every right to be cold to Luke. Luke even says here he was trying to get other members of the band, even Donn Landee, to work with him. And dont forget Luke played on Beat It with Ed and the whole Beat It incident is what started all the troubles that led to the split of VH. Roth wasnt being arrogant he was just being guarded like anyone would be in that situation.

End of the day, everyone making music with the Van Halens and all their contemporaries back in the day are legends and GOAT's. Circa 1992, there was an LA Times article about how when Eddie was having trouble with Sammy, he'd go over to his neighbor, DLR's house, and confide in him. Sammy and DLR are both really sweet, good people. Check Sammy on Bill Maher's podcast recently. Lovely guy.

Luke has a legacy worthy of a galaxy-sized ego, but he's the coolest cat in every interview. His playing is consistently phenomenal.
