My poor niece used to identify as black. Her mum is mixed and her dad is black but anytime she said she was black, the black girls in her school would tell her she’s not black. So eventually he stopped “begging blackness” and just claimed she was mixed.

The truth is they are biracial, They are seldom bicultural, consequently they will identify as the culture that they experienced growing up in and being nurtured by. Often that is the culture of the mother as she nurtures them in their most significant developmental age. This is not to say this is always the case, as there exceptions due to particular circumstances unique to each family. I would say it is most often they will identify with the culture that they moved through life in.

In a perfect world I would agree that having a black parent means you are black, but the experience of being biracial having two parents of two different races is a totally different experience from having two black parents. It’s like mixed people get to be seen as black but Black people don’t get to be seen as mixed, whatever that means to you

He’s speaking truth, I’ve visited the Dominican Republic where I had a racist remark thrown at me. I responded with the biggest smile, “Si Negra! Y Tu tambien!” 😂😊 it was even more ludicrous given the physicality of the person throwing the word. 🤦🏽

I don’t understand his concept. Why can’t you identify as mix race? Because you are mix. Logically this makes more sense.

I disagree. If you have 1 black parent, your mixed. If your mother is black and your father is Asian you are a mixture of both.

Facts. I am light skin but I represent my African mom only because I feel more attached to my mom side of the family. Ok Dr Umar... I agree with you on something hahahah

Disagree. You're being asked to deny an entire half of your family. I'm Jamaican. There are Chinese who claim they are Jamaican before they say they are Chinese.
