History
The Gorkhas were first inducted into the Sikh Army by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The British were impressed by their fighting skills and integrated them into the British Indian Army after the Anglo-Nepal War of 1814-16.

Battle cry
The Gorkhas are known for their war cry, "Jai Mahakali, Aayo Gorkhali," which translates to "The Gurkhas are here".

Motto
The Gorkhas' motto is "Kāfar hōṇḍā mārnu niko," which means "It is better to die than to live like a coward".
