In grad school I wrote a paper about dance during the Revolutionary War. It was banned in places for being a frivolous activity during wartime, but many communities and/or wealthy people held dances anyway. George Washington himself was a big fan of country dance, and his appearances at dances made local newspapers - sometimes including his favorite numbers and the young ladies who were his lucky partners. Apparently he was also pretty good at it! Anyway, tl;dr, not every community had a problem with dancing, and bans during the Revolutionary period were mainly not for religious or political reasons.

Just depends on which religious group. Catholics are fine with dancing, but most southern Baptists considered it sexual - especially after Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley.
Anyone who thinks all dancing in general is sinful hasn't read their Bible. Find a concordance and look up the word "dance."
Here's one just for an example:
Psalms 149:3-4 NLT
[3] Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. [4] For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.
