As someone who grew up on farmland (but not as a farmer, my dad was a charter fisherman and we had a small cottage), I have to agree. The farmers in the area displayed all the signs of old money wealth. They didnāt work hard, they ran farm hands into the ground. They hid their wealth until it suited them, for example when the Scottish government decided to give automatic planning permission where there was evidence of a previous dwelling or building. Within a few years, scores of cottages were built to flip as houses or holiday lets in our coastal area. For some l, planning permission meant it had to be a place of business for a time. Two cafes were opened within three miles and then closed as soon as possible to sell as houses. I know its anecdotal but Iām talking about a pattern of behavior and not one family. When the father died at the farm next to me, the sons sold it for Ā£4M each and never returned (I know because they smugly told me). In our rural area, I would say the farmers were the very last people who required any financial assistance.

GMB was interviewing farmers at the demo. All saying how some are on just 25k a year. And then when they got some push back from the presenter saying that smaller farmers with assets of less than 3 million wonāt be affected they all mentioned how much they would lose. One was saying that he would be paying over 250k in tax the presenter worked out that his farm was worth over 10m and that was an effective tax rate of just 2.5%
Oh how my heart bleeds for them.

They are likely to be claiming the first class travel as a business expense. Begs the question what else do they run as business expenses and why do so many farmers claim earnings below the 40% income tax threshold while drive in range rovers and buy expensive farm machinery and equipment. There is more than meets the eye but for sure its a tax loophole closed
