The Asian tapir ( Tapirus indicus ) is the largest of the four types of tapir, and the only one originating from Asia. The scientific name indicus refers to the East Indies, which is the natural habitat of this species. In Sumatra, tapirs are generally called tapir or seladang, gindol, pig pestle, horse ayer, rimbu horse, arau horse, marba, cipan, and sipan.

The Asian tapir is easily recognizable by its characteristic, light-colored "saddle" from the shoulders to the rump. The hair on other parts of the body is black, except for the tips of the ears which are white like other types of tapirs. This color pattern is useful for camouflage: the muddled color makes it look less like a tapir, other animals might mistake it for a boulder instead of prey when the tapir lies or sleeps.
Asian tapirs grow to a length of between 1.8 and 2.4 m (5 ft 11 in, to 7 ft 10 in), reaching between 90 and 107 cm (2 ft 11 in to 3 ft 6 in) in height. These animals usually weigh between 250 and 320 kg (550 to 710 lb), although some adults can weigh up to 540 kg (1,190 lb). The female Asian Tapir is usually larger than the male Asian Tapir. Like other types of tapirs, it has a short fat tail and a long, flexible trunk. On each front foot there are four nails and on each hind foot three nails. The Asian Tapir's sense of sight is rather poor but its sense of hearing and smell is very sharp.

Life cycle
The Asian tapir's gestation period is about 400 days, after which a cub is born weighing 6.8 kg (15 lb). The Asian tapir is the largest at birth compared to other types of tapir and grows faster than other types of tapir. young tapirs of all kinds have brown hair with white stripes and spots, a pattern that allows them to hide effectively in forest shadows. This pattern in infants changes to the color pattern of an adult tapir between four and seven months after birth. Tapir chicks are weaned between 6 and 8 months of age and these animals become adults at three years of age. Base breeding occurs in April, May or June. Female tapirs usually give birth to one cub every two years.
