Want to know a secret to managing a “difficult dementia behavior” that happens repeatedly?
.
Instead of responding to the behavior AFTER it occurs, try responding to the behavior BEFORE it happens.
.
Look for clues the person is becoming agitated. Look for triggers in the environment. Look for patterns in the timing of when it happens.
.
Ask yourself, what can you engage the person with dementia in BEFORE that behavior happens? What is something they would enjoy? Try getting them involved in that as a way to prevent the behavior from happening at all.
.
Do you have an example of when this approach has helped you? Share below to help a fellow Careblazer.

If you want to find the information she is offering, look for it in the Description. On my phone, I go to the top right corner & click on the stack of three dots. Click on the word "Description". This is where she has typed the helpful tip. Which I have copied & pasted below:

Is there a point when medication is needed for agitation that's turning to verbal anger outbursts, paranoia, false accusations, depression? It's hard to catch agitation before it happens in my situation because it's constant complaining, and false accusations...and false memories. I'm blessed my mom is in a facility, I'd have lost my mind if she was with us longer than she was.

How do you get a dementia patient to do something other than watch TV if that is the only thing they want to do? I’m afraid that they are progressing their disease faster by not being mentally engaged.

Sometimes I will try to find what the dementia patient is focused on. Sometimes I ask if they are thinking about food, or water, perhaps they need to use the restroom. Sometimes I will find patient/client/loved one stuck in an action. Perhaps forgetting what they got up for, so I will ask if they are comfortable, if they are thinking of food, temperature maybe. If not I will direct focus on easy questions. Sometimes that's tough too. What might be an easy question may not be so simple. I can ask, do you prefer this food to this food, or this tv programs, only to be told, it's whatever or I don't think so, that usually opens the opportunity to ask other questions or sometimes reassure and sooth with quick, patient explanations. Once, bedtime took 2 hours because i failed to express that everyone is OK. Reaffirm their schedule, perhaps. It's a good question and can be tricky.
