Day 44 of one boating tip a day!
I wrote this script about three months ago, after some interactions with a few asshole skippers and locals. In the end, I decided not to make it because this is a lovely community and I don’t want to bring up the bad parts of it. But two days ago, a couple started shouting and cursing at us for doing some figure eights around mooring balls, even though we weren’t that close to them. They really, really got angry with us, despite us being smiley and friendly. I had to vent, mainly to remind myself not to take these things personally.

As a sailing and cruising instructor, I love showing my students the beauty of meeting amazing people on the water—sharing meals, drinks, and late-night guitar songs. But almost every week, we encounter some rude individual who will cut in line at the marina just to show off, someone who yells at us to leave “their” bay, or just general unpleasant behavior.

This is a reminder to be kind to our fellow captains. We’re the ones who will save each other in times of distress. We are an amazing family of free-spirited, adventure-chasing people, with the occasional sprinkle of strongly opinionated individuals.
And to not take it personally when you encounter a dickhead.
