FAST EXPLENATION šŸ‘‡

Courbetā€™s A Burial at OrnansĀ (1849-50) sparked intense controversy for its monumental size, which was traditionally reserved for heroic or religious themes. Depicting an ordinary rural funeral on such a grand scale, the painting challenged academic norms, shocking audiences and critics alike.

The paintingā€™s realistic portrayal of unidealized, everyday people was seen as unrefined and ā€œugly,ā€ with critics disliking the crowded, disorganized composition and lack of a focal point.

Critics also disapproved of the paintingā€™s impiety; funeral scenes typically conveyed religious reverence, but Courbetā€™s version portrayed the attendees as indifferent, with clergy appearing detached from the ceremony. The prominent crucifix, seemingly disregarded by those present, led some to see the painting as a critique of declining religious faith in France.

While initially met with outrage,Ā A Burial at OrnansĀ later earned praise for its realistic approach and helped establish Courbet as a leading figure in French Realism, inspiring future artists to explore new themes and techniques

I live for these kind of paintings that shaked the system back then. They really needed it. Nowadays there seems to be nothing that can do the same. Everything is already seen and heard and people don't react to anything.

How are they ugly? Iā€™m sure those people lived the insanity difficult lives and presented themselves the best they could. They were surviving, not thriving.

Reminds me of a quote ā€œThe straight line is godless. The straight line is an obsession with perfection and perfection is an unattainable conceit.ā€ -Guillermo Del Toro

I love Gustave Courbet, I live in his hometown, Ornans in Franche-ComtƩ. All my school trips went to the Courbet museum in this city. I will remember all my life when there was a temporary exhibition at the Louvre and I went to see it. I saw in real life, the origin of the world, the self-portrait, a funeral in Ornans, the bathers, the injured man.... In addition, recently, there was an exhibition on Manet at the BesanƧon museum , I saw the painting where Courbet and Manet had a picnic together. Just magnificent!

whats nice abt this painting is that these ppl were great grandparents of ppl who still live in Ornans today, they r recognisable by them
its so cool to be able to go to a museum n recognise an ancestor, as well as maybe see ur face in the painting too

It is insane how people could only accept paintings of "Perfect" people when those people themselves weren't perfect

The point is, art isn't about beauty, its about expressing yourself - and what people see is what is in them

I honestly think itā€™s very lovely. It shows the darkness and mundaneness of life. The religious symbols are very minimal aka what it looks like in daily life.
I think it makes the scene all the more holy: sometimes religion is just a tiny light within that helps you keep going through all the darkness and hard times

Critics do not know art, they only think they do. As do the rest of us.

No face is too ugly for a painting, but we have broken the eyes of many artists from birth with cheap and idiotic Western standards of beauty.
