Majestic Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3700/1 “Khanjar”
We are proud to present a very rare and historically important Patek Philippe : The mythical Nautilus in 18k yellow gold, with the coat of arms of the Sultanate of Oman – the seal of Khanjar – resting on an elegant black matte ribbed dial.
The symbol associated with Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said of Oman, a stylized representation of a traditional Omani dagger, known as a “Khanjar.” The Khanjar holds significant cultural and historical importance in Oman, being first used at the formation of the country in 1970, symbolizing authority, honor, and heritage. Sultan Qaboos used it as a personal emblem, reflecting his connection to Omani tradition and his role as a leader. The symbol – utilized in the same manner as those for other royal houses – often appears on official documents, flags, and other representations associated with the Sultan and the Omani government.
It is believed that first watches bearing the Khanjar were sports Rolexes gifted to foreign military personnel, and this generous habit continued throughout his lifetime as royal states gifts, from servants to foreign dignitaries to private jet pilots, ambassadors and whoever deserved his kindness.
Accepted as one of (if not) the world’s most prominent watch collector, renowned brands such as Tudor, IWC, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Piaget, Omega and few others had dials with the Omani crest, often the serial numbers of watches with Khanjar dials have consecutive numbers or very close digits which give clue that they were part of a batch ordered specifically by or for the late Sultan.

The present special commissioned 3700/1 yellow gold was produced in 1977, part of a special order on request of His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos. While we are more familiar today with Khanjar Rolex Day-Dates, a Khanjar Nautilus is not something people usually witnessed because at that time a gold Nautilus was among the most expensive sports watches on any brand’s catalogue, most of the steel watches were generously gifted for outstanding service rendered by the Monarch to civilians, administrative workers alike but gold watches were reserved for dignitaries, high ranking local or foreign military officers and close entourage of His Majesty.
So far, only 6 yellow gold Nautiluses with the majestic dagger are known to exist, we have identified them all with documented serial numbers. Out of the 6 only one watch was delivered on September 23rd 1978 and the other 5 (including ours) were delivered as a batch to the Sultan on September 27th 1978, hence validating their royal provenance.
Finely printed in gold at 6 o’clock, the Khanjar crest rests on a sober black matte ribbed dial with shades of blue made by Stern Frères. The dial is stamped “Swiss sigma” and early signs of tropicalization can be noticed on the dial and natural oxidation on numerals, a testament to the preservation state of this original majestic vintage timepiece.
A true jewel of a watch, there are 36 more such jewels decorating the movement inside. The 3700/1 is powered by the automatic caliber 28-255 C, based on the very reliable ultra-thin caliber 920 by Jaeger-LeCoultre, which is stamped with the Geneva Seal.
The integrated bracelet on this “Jumbo” Nautilus is from the early series that were made by the experts “Gay Frères”, highly regarded as the best bracelet manufacturer’s of that time, increasing the collectible value of this royal watch even further.
