To add: Philosophy is the precursor of all the academic fields. Many of our greatest thinkers and inventors were philosophers and polymaths. This is why I was drawn to it in undergrad! Today, Philosophy is looked down upon because academia has become so specialized.

PhD in Philosophy: "I see no problem here"

also, when doing phd, one thinks and researches on epistemology, ontology and methodology in the realm of their field. so in a way it’s like doing philosophy on your very own subject.

I do feel like it is a philosophical component since academics introduce new knowledge and theories into their fields.

Most STEM Bachelors get a BS, or a Bachelor of Science. It is a bacca lauri (laurel berry, aka a reward) for obtaining scientia (knowledge).

STEM Masters split between Science or something specific (Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, etc); they have obtain magister (more) knowledge in said field and are meg (greater) than most in the field.

As PhDs, it is no longer about obtaining old knowledge but creating new knowledge, not describing "what" but discovering "why". As a source of knowledge they must docere (teach) to contribute their findings to the human race overall in the name of philosophia (love of wisdom), hence why some become profetiri (to profess) while others directly contribute said knowledge to society.

So initially, someone without a PhD qualification decided to offer PhD degrees to individuals of the next generations :)

Natural sciences were once natural philosophy. Science used to be part of philosophy. Until, gradually, the scientific method (observation, hypothesis, test / experimentation) made those activities into their own special thing. Yet, for any scientist, it is worthwhile to keep in touch with the philosophical origins for their craft. One good place to see why this makes sense, for instance, would be Werner Heisenberg's "Physics and Beyond" (German "Der Teil und das Ganze").

As a hobbyist philosopher, I'm convinced that you may still yet be a philosopher in the modern sense, even if only in Chemistry :)

I was always wondering despite all abbreviations which go according to the letters arrangement for example Abbrev. CAN -> Controller Area network
, PhD goes in the opposite way😂🤣
It is supposed to be DHP.
But it is Phd

I believe from the earliest times of western academia to the renaissance, philosophy just had a different meaning. Fields of study were categorised differently and "science" as a classification became a later development.

PHD-
doctor- (Latin: doceō, lit. 'I teach')
Philosophy-philosophia, 'love of wisdom
So teacher of wisdom i guess is the right inference here.but the question is can anybody TEACH WISDOM??? Knowledge can be taught but wisdom??

funny how the industry belittles people who shows a love of wisdom
