The reason its hard to know the exact number is because there is no one definition for what makes something a US military base. There are US soldiers stationed on NATO owned or foreign military's bases, there are temporary barracks setup on leased foreign land, there are permanent military bases on leased land, there are co-run bases by a foreign military and the US, and there are permanent bases on US owned land. It's hard to determine an exact number when they technically don't own the base or only partially control a base.

I'm a 21 year military veteran. There are easily over 800, not counting outposts and covert locations! If the American taxpayer knew the annual cost to maintain, supply and secure these locations, their heads would spin 360 degrees! Not counting, the damage and loss of equipment.

Weird fun fact.
The Romans had 31 "Super Bases" when they "ran the known Western world". The British had 35. Spain, 30, Portugal, 28....
And the list goes on. But all around 30ish. Every global empire in history had about 30 "super bases" when they were the undisputed global power of their day and "ran the world".
The US currently has 34 super bases, to go along with its nearly 800 forward bases.
Also, in the yearly Pentagon report it always mentions there are "approximately 750 DISCLOSED forward bases". They never talk about the number of undisclosed ones.

In my country we used to host 2 big US based and turning them over to the host country is a blessing for the US. It will cost them less to maintain and they are more interested with small bases that nobody knows.
