“I’m just glad it wasn’t Earth,” qualifies as my understatement of the decade.

The idea that right beneath those murky yellow clouds is nothing but pitch black abyss for a a hundred lengths of the earth down to the core is terrifying

RIP Gene Shoemaker, who died in a terrible road accident not long after.

I watched it in real-time at a large astronomical observatory. Unforgettable

This is why whenever I see Jupiter in the night sky I think to myself "so glad you're there bro"

Always appreciate the gas giants for being our solar system’s punching bag so the rocky planets don’t get pummeled to gravel by impacts

Sun is like the father who gives up resources and Jupiter is like a mother who's taking care of the family

for context, the last "black scar" on the surface of Jupiter shown in this video was about as wide as the entire planet earth.

I guess we'll never know how many Earth-killing comets and asteroids Jupiter swallowed in its history. We owe our thanks and respect to the god of Jollity.

I remember this happening. I was a teen. And I knew Jupiter was a huge gas giant. I was worried at the time it might start a nuclear fire that would ignite it into a small star...
I was young and have learned a little more since then

Kinda weird to think that Jupiter’s black beneath the cloud decks. It’s almost like the realization that the inside of your body operates in essentially complete darkness

Jupiter- being Earth's loyal big brother to the last.
Respect for the big fella 👊

I was so pissed when that thing broke apart. I mean I was 11 years old and I was expecting a super huge colossal explosion and instead I got 9 colossal explosions. The disappointment was so profound I turned my back on the world of astronomy and never looked back until this exact moment
