Dextro-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) is a life-threatening birth defect that occurs when the heart's two main arteries are switched, preventing the heart from supplying the body with enough oxygen-rich blood:
Symptoms
Symptoms include bluish skin color, problems breathing, a pounding heart, a weak pulse, and poor feeding.
Diagnosis
d-TGA can be diagnosed during pregnancy or shortly after birth with tests such as an ultrasound, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-rays, and newborn pulse oximetry screening.
Treatment
Surgery doesn't cure d-TGA, but most people with the condition can lead healthy lives with lifelong care from a cardiologist.
Complications
Complications include arrhythmias, baffle leaks, baffle obstruction, and heart failure.
