Sadly, you edited out the career thing.
This guy went to architectture school, failed miserably despite being passionate about it and studying hard. He goes through depression and alcoholism, then realises his architecture strips are better suited to create toys. He manages to create a toy company that flourishes, the equivalent of LEGO, then find back his young love.
The most beautiful part is seing the buildings in the end: those are the buildings he was designing when he was a young architecture student. Meaning: his toy company was so successful, he also completed his dream to become an architect somewhere in his life. That subtle detail breaks my heart.
