In Matthew 23:23 Jesus appears to be pointing out that scribes and Pharisees were meticulous in their adherence to small details of the law such as tithing herbs, but were neglecting, or perhaps not understanding, the more important and fundamental aspects of the law, such as justice, mercy, and faith. However, he is not saying to NOT pay tithe, he is saying that one’s spiritual practice should not ONLY focus on outward appearance or minor rituals…such as tithing, but should ALSO prioritize core principles like fairness, compassion, and trust in God in addition to paying tithe.
Malachi 3:8-9 - God saying the house of Israel had robbed God by NOT paying a tithe and were cursed.
Malachi 3:10-12 - God asking his people to test him by bringing their tithes to the church. If they did, he would open the windows of heaven and pour out a “blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it”.
