So it has been revealed to have been an NC National Guard Blackhawk making a delivery to a landing area were other helicopters had landed before. Problem was, the other helicopters were smaller, much smaller.
When the crewmen seen the havoc created by the rotor downwash, the pilot immediately aborted the landing attempt. There was no ill intent on the part of the pilot, crew, or government agency to disrupt the operation, only poor planning.
The crew has been grounded pending further investigation.
This WAS NOT an attempt by our government to destroy supplies or disrupt distribution efforts.

Love your channel, been watching since the log cabin. I was a JTAC for about 10 years in the Marines. While I know this looks bad, it happens all the time with RW aircraft. They get too used to landing on fixed LZs and forget when they are doing real world things. Same thing happened when we went down for Katrina, CH53s blew stuff all over. This is probably some National Guard pilot realized he messed up and waived off.

I've seen posts that this was an LZ helos were using to pick up supplies. This could easily be a few things. First an inexperienced ground crew staged supplies too close to the LZ from their experience with smaller civilian birds. A blackhawk has a lot more downdraft. Second the civi shelters were not staked down like htey would at a mil LZ. Third the pilot cant see the downdraft much of the time. He's relying on his crew and the ground to let him know. Time how long it is when things start flying till he moves off. Subtract two seconds for him to hear and adjust his controls. If he ment destruction he could have slid over the entire base wrecking it.
This is an adhoc operation. Mistakes will happen as people learn. Content like this might result in people shooting at people that probably dont mean evil. Lets face it, if the military has turned towards harming civilians we have a much larger issue than the flooding.

Cody, I’m here, just down river of Lake Lure and Chimney rock.
We need small portable generators, Buddy heaters and campstoves.
Temperatures are dropping and people who have been without power for 11 days, no running water, spoiled food/no refrigeration, and have no heat are going to start dying of exposure. Temps are below 50 F which sounds not bad, but can be fatal to someone ill from spoiled food or malnutrition, dehydrated, or just sheer exhausted.
Please help coordinate a shipment of those specific items.
We have heli-crews that can airdrop then right into areas where people can use them.

Pilot here, this is likely a NCNG UH-60. With ongoing operations and a continually changing landscape, what could have been a clear landing area may have become not so clear since they were last there. An unfamiliar ground crew could have a smaller landing area appropriate for the smaller civilian helicopters, but when the Blackhawk made an approach, it created too much downdraft for the area below to handle. Looks like many tents werent staked down, something the military aircrew is likely used to with their LZs. Doing something like this on purpose poses a significant danger to the aircraft, aircrew, and then the people below. Look up the video of a MI-17 eating a tent and crashing. Not everything is malice. Doing this job will come with many challenges and im sure they're doing their best.

I live in Salisbury and went up to Crossnore and Linville to help a friend out and volunteer in the area with some work friends. The people are very appreciative for all the help they’ve been given by donations and volunteers. I was encouraged to see the strength of the people within small communities. The only people we had seen helping other people was the local law enforcement, volunteers, and good old country boys strapped up and sleeves rolled up.

@wranglerstar I agree that the government is likely making mistakes, and the underlying reasons could be more complex and troubling than many realize. However, as a licensed helicopter pilot, it seems to me that the pilot was making a steep approach for landing or observation. Once they noticed the chaos happening on the ground, they appear to have aborted the takeoff. Of course, I could be wrong, as a video only gives one point of view.

From Western NC, this is a horrific disaster. I'm lucky to have a house. Some of my friends weren't so lucky. Because of ProHos and others video me and my family were more prepared then others for our struggles, however I have to say law enforcement and government have really put the boot on our necks in what we can and can't do. Blocking some of only roads left to move equipment in is understandable until someone had an emergancy and then gets arrested for trying to travel the only safe road. Blocking roads for government use only when there are already so few. People told not to fix their roads, under threat of arrest because it's NCDOTs job, but also telling them it could take years. Blocking Truck traffic and donations because it isn't on their approved lists. Having my ID checked every time I enter my hometown to make sure I belong. It's crazy.
