Hi Dan! I like this kind of shorts... What about:
5) use a flash on your subject
6) use a soft grad nd filter for your sky
7) combine more different exposed pictures (hdr) for static subjects

#6 use a reflector
#7 use a tripod, expose for and shoot the sky. Then expose for and shoot the subject. Combine in post.
