I still remember the Pressure chamber in Pcola FL, they simulate 35k feet and you play patty cake with the guy/gal next to you until you black out. That way you realize the initial symptoms. Best part is they record it so you get to see yourself black out after its over. Miss the Navy A LOT

Pretty sure in the Independence Day scene, he took of his mask because he was hyperventilating from stress because he knew he couldn't get away from his pursuer and was about to die anyway.

I assume "This is what happens if a fighter pilot takes of their mask" is the title of the clip our pilot friend here is reacting to and not his actual interpretation of the scene.
In the movie the pilot was trying to make a high speed hard turn, which he couldn't because of the G-forces resulting from such a maneuvre. My interpretation of this scene always was that because of the high Gs he had trouble breathing, which is why he took the mask off. But since he didn't stop turning he eventually passed out from the high G-forces (not because he took the mask off).
Hard turns always bleed a lot of energy/speed, so not only did he show high aspect to the alien pursuers, he also got slow (and passed out), which made him an easy target.

iirc, i saw somewhere that with this scene taking of the mask because it was hard to breathe was very wrong , particularly with the altitude. i also think that this was done for the drama and more about him being all out of sorts which lead to him getting shot down

When an airliner loses pressure they only need to get below 10,000 feet to make sure everyone has enough oxygen, keeping the cockpit at 10-15,000 saves weight on pressurization systems and seals and helps prevent the canopy from blowing out should it get damaged.

If the pressure is “higher” inside the cockpit than it is in the mask, you won’t have ANY problems breathing. It’s when the pressure in the cockpit is lower than it is in the mask. That’s when it becomes a problem. I’m sure he meant to say when the pressure is equivalent to a higher altitude. As you go up in altitude, the atmospheric pressure drops.
