As a Cornish lad. Good to see the work of the Cornish miners shared around the world. Where there's a mine, there's a Cornishman.

My father grand father were miners. Tommy knockers are real! My father told me that I would never work underground ever. Im 63 yo from Colorado. Tommy knockers are a safety guard. However, if you didn't respect them desth would come swiftly. I remember a few stories. I would share a couple if anyone wants to hear.

As someone who used to do a lot of spelunking and old mine exploration (mainly in Southeastern Arizona in and around a small copper-mining town where I lived out the remainder of my youth, as well as in an old silver-mining town-turned billionaire's ghetto in Central Colorado ... my hometown, and where the youngest of my three younger sisters still lives) I recall hearing a voice, specifically in my left ear ... on a regular basis, when exploring caves and old, abandoned mines where this voice would warn me of danger and to which I intelligently listened to, leading myself away from any hazards, saving my life on several ocassions. So yes, I totally believe in Tommyknockers, and spirit guides, and guardian angels, and entities and nature spirits who protect us, as long as we listen to that first, most intuitive voice telling us to "GET OUT NOW!"

I come from a long line of coal miners based around Birmingham UK, my fathers father was the sole survivor of a mine collapse that killed hundreds because during a nap on his break his long deceased mother came to him telling him to wake up and get out there and then.

Lots of strange happenings occur down below.

Hello! Cornish born and bread here.

This is still taught in schools as young as five. Of course only for a bit of fun nowadays.

Always throw your pasty crust for the knockers

Its true spent many years down coal mines in England Tommy nockers told you when to get out.
can tell tails of near death i told my wife about life underground and she said if I knew what you went through I would of never let you do that job.
Life underground is something you have to experience and no one on this planet can say different I have seen things that no earth dwellers can understand I used to work a abandoned coal face running water pumps I used to sit on a platform in the middle of a water logged face pumping warter tommy knockers kept you safe

The Cornish Miners (I'm Cornish) would take their meal for the day, the Pasty. It would have a thick crimp (hen on left, cock on right) and a 'nub' end, which they would hold as they ate it as the mines had Arsenic in them before throwing it down the mine to appease the spirits, 'The Knockers'.
President Roosevelt came to Cornwall to learn and take back our mining knowledge. We were honoured by Cornish pubs in America, with our banners 'One and All', serving Cornish Pasties. Australia also honoured us for our mining skills with statues of our male and female miners, 'Jack's and Jennies'.
Also the English (which we are NOT) history of the Pilgrims leaving Plymouth, England for American, naming the first port 'Plymouth' is a LIE. It left 'Lewyn', Cornwall...naming its first port after our capital 'Truro'.

And here's me 100% cornish. My kids great grandad was a miner, he's now 78, he spoke alot about the tommy knockers. Fun fact, alot of them worked in their underwear because it was so hot down in the mines.
