The mistake you made was that you did not have a personal relationship with Christ. Anybody can call themselves a Christian but do they have a working relationship with Jesus Christ? A personal, consistent relationship with God would have cleared all the confusion you were having. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Narrow is the way that leads to life and broad is the way that leads to destruction. Jesus will still be at your door and will keep knocking. He will never force you to open the door. It will be your choice to let Jesus in or not.
