The great Portuguese Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa on the island of Floripa, Brazil. After the collapse of the Iberian Union, the conflict between Spain and Portugal extended to their colonial interests as well. The Portuguese in southern Brazil began preparing for what was thought to be a Spanish invasion. On the island we know today as Florianopolis, a series of 3 forts were built towards the north end with two being on smaller islands and São José da Ponta Grossa on the big island. The idea was to create a gauntlet for any enemy ships whereby the Portuguese could triangulate cannon fire.
