There’s a famous mixer - who’s name I forget - that talked about religiously lining up and phase matching the drum tracks with snare. The kick has a longer fundamental wavelength and so has a bit of wiggle room by comparison. I think that’s the effect of punch you’re gaining , it’s just that you’re using a grid to line it up. Just aligning the drum tracks to each other has the same effect 🙂

Most of your content taches us how to properly use EQ and compression (thank you!), but how much time do you spend on getting the levels right? Before applying any effects, do you know if the mix isn't going to work and need parts to be re-recorded? (like in this case, if you didn't have digital tools to put it on the grid)

Haha I appreciate your channel Jordan, I’ve gotten a lot out of it. Having said that, I this feels like a roundabout way of doubling down on your dogmatic beliefs about quantisation 😂 I’m in the middle of a project and half the tunes are quantised, half aren’t. Some it was necessary because of flams, some the drummers feel and timing was way off and the others, I edited as a matter of course and ditched the edits, because it killed the groove of the song. I’d also argue that editing drums (editing in general) is a key part of mixing, whether it’s done as prep or correction on the fly like in this video 🤙🏼

Ah, so you mean the drums weren't firing away like a drum machine or a virtual drum plugin, but playing like an actual human, so you found a way to iron that humanity out.
Probably then had to do thhat to the guitars, bass, etc to suit the grid, too.
Yeah, really not a mix problem.
🤦🏻♂️
BTW try doing that to Bonham, or Benny Greb, ot Simon Phillips, or Billy Cobham - see what mix comments you get back from them.
Laughable video & "advice", sooooo narrow sighted, sorry!
😂
(To be clear: there are & can be instances where 100% grid is the rule and is required, like in EDM or pop, but that is a production decision, an arrangement & genre requirement, and in the rare, absurd case a real drummer was called in for that job and play 100% on the grid which negates many of reasons for having a real, live drummer then it should be someone who is capable of doing that in the first place: arbitrarily butchering the timing of a mix is not a mixer's j

Don't tell Glenn from SMG you put drums on the grid. He will say you have no talent.
